Cardiorespiratory fitness: The single strongest predictor of healthspan

VO2 max testing measures the maximum rate at which your heart, lungs, and muscles utilize oxygen during intense exercise. Here is why it belongs at the foundation of every longevity plan.

Why cardiorespiratory fitness matters

Cardiorespiratory fitness reflects the integrated capacity of your pulmonary, cardiovascular, and muscular systems. Clinical research consistently shows that moving from low cardiorespiratory fitness to above-average fitness reduces all-cause mortality risk more than almost any other modifiable health factor.

Your dedicated provider uses your VO2 max score not just as an endurance benchmark, but as a window into your mitochondrial function, cardiovascular reserve, and long-term functional independence.

How the assessment works

A standard VO2 max assessment is conducted on a stationary bike or treadmill under the supervision of a trained exercise physiologist. As intensity gradually increases, a specialized mask captures your breath-by-breath gas exchange, analyzing oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon dioxide production (VCO2).

The test identifies your exact aerobic threshold (Zone 2) and anaerobic threshold, giving your care team the precise physiological data needed to prescribe training that optimizes fat oxidation and cardiovascular health without overtraining.

Connecting testing to your Personal Health Plan

A number on a test sheet is only useful if it changes what you do. Your VO2 max results feed directly into the Movement & Recovery pillar of your Personal Health Plan.

Your dedicated provider pairs your cardiorespiratory metrics with your body composition scan (Styku 3D) and metabolic bloodwork (fasting insulin, ApoB, lactate thresholds) to build a personalized, progressive exercise prescription that fits your week.

Questions to discuss with your provider

What is my current age-adjusted cardiorespiratory fitness percentile? What is my ideal Zone 2 heart rate range for mitochondrial efficiency? How will we balance aerobic base building with high-intensity intervals and resistance training?

Your provider reviews these metrics with you in detail and schedules periodic re-testing to measure your physiological adaptation and progress.

Tracking your progress in RAVE Mobile

Your baseline score, ventilatory thresholds, and custom heart rate training zones are saved directly into your RAVE Mobile health record.

As you log training sessions and track resting heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV), your provider monitors how your body is adapting and refines your plan ahead of your next scheduled checkup.
